Rattle your brains on a Monday morning

It’s that time of year again when the mornings are just like the nights- cold wet and miserable. The last thing you feel like is getting out of bed and going into work with those Monday morning blues. So when you get into the office, why not start your day with a simple jigsaw (www.jigzone.com), to get your brain into gear. It’s simple and easy and only takes a few minutes. Alternatively, a quick wrestle with a cryptic crossword might do the trick. Try one – oh, go on. It’s useful if you have a brilliant solver in the workplace but if this isn’t the case and the crossword makes no sense, buy the following day’s paper and look at the answers! You’ll soon get the hang of it.

Or … if you really want to know what’s happening in the world of IT log on to The Register (www.theregister.co.uk), where you will be updated with all the latest information on any new services or products.

Who rules the internet?

The US government has won the right to retain control of the internet at the UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), held in Tunisia at the beginning of the month.

At the moment the internet is run by an international non- profit making organisation - Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which was set up by the US government in 1998. Since its establishment, Icann have introduced competition among domain name registrars, created a dispute resolution process for trademark conflicts as well as administering the domain name system.

Although the summit caused much controversy in Tunis, (the Tunisian Government have been accused of filtering and blocking websites which they do not agree with), where the world’s media saw a lot of protesting, a new deal was struck. A new Internet Governance Forum will be set up next year which will help decide upon public policy issues of the internet. It will be made up of governments as well as private and civil society, but they will have no power over the existing bodies. Many governments, from both the rich and poorer countries would like to share the running of the internet, instead of one country, to benefit from the information and communication technologies and to close the gap between the richer and poorer countries.

So, for now, it looks like the US will retain full control of the internet, where the US based IT companies will benefit mostly. But the battle of who runs the internet is not over, and there will be more controversy to come.

Cheaper internet providers- are they better than us?

Everybody’s looking for a cheaper alternative for anything that they buy. They will always get several different quotes from different companies before deciding which one is best for them. It’s no different for any business either, they will shop around for the best deal for them and this includes buying a domain name for their company, that will give them a presence on the World Wide Web (www).

There are at the moment one of two options, either you get an internet service provider (ISP) to do that for you OR you can register the domain name yourself on sites such as 123.register. The only difference is when you do it yourself, it really means DIY!!

The reason - well firstly, you have to know how the domain names work and what the incentives are for registering one, and secondly what else it can do for you and your company, whereas if you used an ISP, like Level 5, they will do all this for you. They will register the domain name for you, then provide you with after sales service where they are at the other end of the phone if anything happens to go wrong, or just for general advice. So, on paper they might look cheaper and better but in the long run we can offer a better deal.

It’s Christmas!!!

Every year it’s the same- you dread going Christmas shopping because the queues will be never ending, all the shops will be overcrowded with people pushing and shoving each other and you can guarantee that it will be a wet and miserable day. So why not do all your shopping online? Its quick, it’s easy and there’s no queuing involved!! You can get anything you want, from stocking fillers to electrical goods and all this is at your fingertips, without leaving the house. And the best thing about online shopping is you don’t have to worry about when the shops close. Recent studies have shown that online shopping in the UK has increased by 100%, with more and more people using this on a regular basis, with many opting to go online rather than hitting the high street this Christmas.
