Final registration of .eu domain names.

From April 7th you can register your .eu domain names. This is the last stage of registering .eu domain names and is an ‘open to all’ invitation. It is based on a “first come, first served” basis so get in there, quick!!

Having the .eu domain will allow you to have a much higher presence within the internet community which is also protected by EU rules. EURid, the non- profit making organisation that is in charge of the .eu domain are expecting a large number of applications since they first offered the domain in December 2005.

You can check what domains have already been registered by logging onto www.eurid.eu.

If you want to add your company with the .eu domain name, then feel free to contact us.

Virus names confusing you?

Some people may think they know about the various different computer viruses that are around but not everyone will know which is which. It is known that all companies are aware of the viruses but they all call them by different names.

Security software is also unable to pick up the different virus names that can get into the computer networks therefore leading to a large number of discreet attacks. Getting word out to the press about any new attacks tends to take priority over naming any new viruses. Giving any virus a single name can help identify it quickly and therefore allow the anti- virus software to respond to it as soon as possible. It can be easily picked up by the software and by the information technology teams. But for consumers, naming of viruses still remains a source of confusion.

Hackers getting into your emails and changing your pass words?

Hacking is still a major problem for the online community, especially where it concerns “forgotten passwords.” Where someone tries to log into an e-commerce site and the response is “invalid user name/ password” can lead to hackers to exploit these details by trial and error. Even though this is a time consuming process it can lead to getting personal information about consumers such as postal addresses and credit card details.

Extra security measures need to be taken in order to prevent these types of attacks from occurring on a regular basis.

Don’t be fooled- it’s not what it seems

From April 11th 2006, the telephone company Talk Talk, (owned by the Carphone Warehouse Group), is offering “free broadband, forever” to everyone who signs up for their new land line service, Talk3 International. Sounds like a good deal? Well it isn’t- this service is only available to home users, NOT business users! And there are extra costs involved than advertised. To start off with you need to have a BT landline in order to apply for this offer otherwise its useless if you’re a cable customer. Another thing is that Talk Talk can only provide the ‘free broadband’ to certain areas of the country so it’s best to check the availability in your area before you buy.

We at Alpha Omega can provide you with a decent broadband connection, with no restrictions and we only give you a price that is worked out on your needs. And finally we can provide all this for business users!

Business continuity planning

Business continuity planning is an essential part of any business today- it helps companies reduce the risk of losing important information that helps with the day-to-day running of their business. Having a back-up plan means having some sort of security just in case anything happens that can affect the business, such as a power cut. What most people don’t realize is that you need to test your back- up plans, such as tapes that go in your server. You need to make sure these work on a daily basis just in case an emergency does occur. Why have a back-up plan if it doesn’t work?

Here at Alpha Omega we can provide you with a tailor made back up solution and we will also tell you how to test it on a regular basis so you know that the plan works. Call us on 0845 345 2820 for more information.
